We would like to introduce ourselves

The Concert Society was founded 2013 by the members of the chorus of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, in order to perform at events with their large choral repertoire at high artistic level. This, in addition their work at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

In the past, wellknown conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Christopher Hogwood, Christian Thielemann, Andris Nelsons, etc. have conducted the chorus. At the moment, it is works closely with the current chief conductor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Mr. Donald Runnicles. They and many more have all influenced the musical flexibility and creative impetus of the chorus.

Numerous recordings have been made by the chorus in cooperation with major record labels such as Decca and Deutsche Grammophon.

A long series of prestigious choral directors such as Walter Hagen-Groll, Marcus Creed, Karl Kamper, to name a few, have moulded generations of choral practice. Since 2007, Mr. William Spaulding is our chorus master.

The Chorus has received numerous prizes in the last few years. Three times in a row, 2009 2010 and 2011 the chorus was awarded the title, Chorus of the Year, by the German opera critics in the magazine „Opera World“. In 2012, the foundation "Pro Europa" honoured the chorus with the „European Culture Prize“.

Chorus-Master William Spaulding

William Gillespie Spaulding, born in Washington DC, is one of the leading operatic chorus masters in the world today. Reviewing the Deutsche Oper Premiere of LOHENGRIN in April 2012, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL EUROPE writes: "A main reason for the resurgence is the in-house chorus, led by American conductor William Spaulding: for three of the past four years, it has been selected as German-speaking Europe's best by Opernwelt magazine.”

Mr. Spaulding is also active with symphonic choruses, conducting at the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago, the MDR Chorus in Leipzig, and Berlin’s RIAS Chamber Choir. He is also known for his successes at the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen and the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, the capital city of Sardinia. Permanent positions also include the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Volksoper Wien and the National Theater in Mannheim.

William Spaulding is also in demand as an orchestral and opera conductor. His successes on the podium with Carmina Burana, La Traviata, and Verdi's Requiem earned him the additional title of Kapellmeister in 2012. Two CARMEN performances followed in 2013, and this year he will also conduct NABUCCO, all at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Other venues include the Volksoper Wien and the Nationaltheater Mannheim. Concert appearances include Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg.

Maestro Spaulding began his studies at the University of Maryland and received a Study Abroad exchange scholarship in his sophomore year, eventually earning his conducting degrees at the Hochschule in Vienna, Austria. He then began his career in provincial German opera houses, returning to Vienna in 1997 as Associate Chorus Master at the Volksoper Wien.

Berlin’s Mayor Klaus Wowereit and his Secretary for Artistic Affairs André Schmitz appointed William Spaulding in 2010 member of the jury for supporting and funding choruses in Berlin. In 2013 the Deutsche Musikrat appointed him juror for their Conductors’ Forum.
