SOUNDS FOR A WHILE transports audiences into two different realms – those of traditional opera and the soundscape of the present day. The two worlds are arguably connected by the power of sounds. Hearing is a direct and unmediated experience and sound thus occupies a special position in our modern, automated society. Yet what are the stimuli that influence and determine the auditory culture of our times? And how can the sounds of this culture be combined with the traditions of staged opera, which represents its own overwhelming world of sound? How can we present on stage the acoustic components of both worlds – the everyday environment and the highly complex art form - in a way that allows visual elements to co-determine, intensify and modify the tapestry of sound? “Sound Studies” is a master’s programme offered by the Berlin University of the Arts which explores modern auditive culture, an omnipresent yet oft neglected and unappreciated aspect of modern life.
