Writers and composers alike have always been inspired by the Faust story. Stravinsky was fascinated by Faust his whole life. His “L'Histoire du Soldat”, premiered in 1918 and originally conceived for a travelling theatre as a piece “for reading, acting out and dancing”, tells of a soldier who goes on holiday with his one possession, a fiddle, and chances upon the devil. Dreaming of the riches that have been promised to him, he delivers himself into evil.
“L'Histoire du Soldat” will be preceded by Faust lieder written by Franz Schubert and Richard Wagner.
