About the performance

The author John von Düffel has adapted Joseph Conrad’s celebrated classic novella »Heart of Darkness« as a jazz narrative for the concert stage — "Conrad’s story, in which he describes the atrocities committed during the subjugation of the Congo, is a seminal work for critics of colonialism. The issue continues to have ripples up to the present day: one street in Brussels named after the Belgian King Leopold II was only recently renamed. The »Congo Free State« was Leopold’s private property and he could dispose of its inhabitants as if they were his own chattels and possessions. »Heart of Darkness« is not actually operatic material; with its stream-of-consciousness style of narration it is often called a journey into the interior. One thing that made the abridging process easier was that the story is carried forward not just by the text but also by the music that Manfred Honetschläger composed specially for the evening. There’s an anarchical quality to his jazz. His composition is a fine rendition of the jolt delivered by Conrad’s story." —
