About the performance

In this edition the programme is dominated by Robert Schumann’s "Liederkreis” op. 39, a song cycle in which he set 12 Eichendorff poems to music. The cycle was written in 1840, an intensive period of creativity which saw Schumann produce about half of his entire catalogue of vocal music. The composer himself called the collection “the most Romantic” of his works. We are presented with a string of soulful nocturnes featuring artful variations on the loneliness themes of the day, which swing between demonic possession and a never-satisfied yearning for security and comfort. “Would that I could sing myself to death like a nightingale,” wrote Schumann at the time to Clara, his future wife. In providing the material that inspired a composer, Joseph von Eichendorff was to Robert Schumann what Wilhelm Müller was Franz Schubert. The programme also features a selection of lieder and duets by Johannes Brahms.

The poet Nadja Küchenmeister (born 1981, Berlin) came to prominence with her “Alle Lichter” and “Unter dem Wacholder” collections (Schöffing & Co., 2010 and 2014). Here she responds with texts written specially for the evening.

Classical art songs and modern poetry – lieder recital meets poetry reading in this series of events organised jointly with the Haus für Poesie Berlin. Each of the four evening events held in the foyer of the Deutsche Oper Berlin will feature a poet reading original works whose themes complement the songs on the programme.
