The list ranges from Aribert Reimann to Chaya Czernowin, from Giorgio Battistelli to Keyvan Chemirani – hardly any opera house in the world has premiered as many new works for musical theatre as the Deutsche Oper Berlin under the artistic direction of Dietmar Schwarz. With his very first premiere, Lachenmann's DAS MÄDCHEN MIT DEN SCHWEFELHÖLZERN (The Girl with the Sulphur Matches), he opened eyes and ears to unfamiliar sounds and, with the Tischlerei, opened his own venue exclusively for world premieres. And at the end of his tenure at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, there is another world premiere: Rebecca Saunders' LASH – ACTS OF LOVE. But how exactly do new operas come about? What drives composers and how do you ensure the best possible creative environment? These and other questions are addressed not only in the book Wie kommt das Neue in die Welt? (How does the new come into the world?), published by Schott Verlag Mainz (Schott Music, 276 pages, €32.50), but also in a book presentation on 2 July at the Akademie der Künste: In conversation with rbb presenter Anja Herzog, Dietmar Schwarz, Rebecca Saunders, Sara Glojnarić and other guests will provide insights into the creative process behind new operas. The event will also feature works by composers who have helped shape this period at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
