About the performance

Dr. Frank Schmitz is an architectural historian and has been working at the Department of Art History at the University of Hamburg since 2018. Previously, he held substitute professorships at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the Freie Universität Berlin. In 2020, he habilitated with a research thesis on theatre construction in the Federal Republic of Germany. On 5 October 2021, Dr Frank Schmitz spoke as part of the lecture and exhibition series "60 Years of Deutsche Oper Berlin" on the topic "Who sits where in the opera? Theatre construction and representation in the post-war period". His latest book has now been published and deals with the demands that theatre and opera houses had to meet after the Second World War, on the one hand to meet the need for art, and on the other to present the spirit of modernity.

Frank Schmitz: „Spiel-Räume der Demokratie – Theaterbau in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland 1949 – 1975“, published by Gebrüder Mann. The book costs € 49.00.
