Even though Italy's great composers are primarily known for their operas, almost all of them also wrote wonderful songs. Accompanying the new production of LA FIAMMA, the first evening of ‘Songs and Poets’ provides an insight into this little-known repertoire with works by Ottorino Respighi and his contemporaries and shows how this tradition was continued right up to Luciano Berio's ‘Quattro canzoni popolari’.
Swiss poet Mathias Traxler (born 1973 in Basel) responds to the songs of the evening. His texts, which blur the boundaries between genres, are written in close proximity to music. He has published the volumes ‘you're welcome’ and ‘Unterhaltungsessays’ (2011 and 2016 respectively) with kookbooks and, most recently, ‘Komplimente machen’ (2020) with hochroth Wiesenburg.
