Statement zum Terrorangriff auf Israel - Deutsche Oper Berlin

Statement on the terrorist attack on Israel

Due to its history, Deutsche Oper Berlin has long had ties with the State of Israel and its cultural institutions, especially the New Israeli Opera.  It is of central importance to us that the Jewish artists working with us feel safe in Germany. The terrible terrorist attack on the Israeli population shows us that it is indispensable to confront anti-Semitism with all determination here as well. Deutsche Oper Berlin therefore endorses the following statement by the German Stage Association:

Statement on the terrorist attack on Israel

"We are deeply shocked by the attack on Israel by the terrorist organisation Hamas. Our thoughts are with the victims of the cowardly acts of violence, with their relatives and with all those who are currently fearing for their future. Israel's security is rightly part of Germany's reason of state.

The German theatres and orchestras stand in solidarity with Israel. Nothing can justify the excesses of violence against the Israeli population. It is appalling that some people are using the current situation as an opportunity to spread anti-Semitic hatred in Germany. The current situation therefore challenges us once again to resolutely oppose anti-Semitism, misanthropy and violence in our society, to guarantee the safety of Jews and to open up spaces for peaceful cultural encounters.

The theatres and orchestras want to and will continue to promote togetherness in diversity and freedom in our society."
