We are delighted that Tobias Kratzer was honoured as ‘Best Director’ at the 2025 OPER! AWARDS on 21 February 2025 at the Théâtre La Monnaie in Brussels. Our warmest congratulations! 

The award also expressly refers to his production of Richard Strauss' INTERMEZZO, which he created together with Sir Donald Runnicles and Philipp Jekal as the court conductor Storch and Maria Bengtsson as his wife Christine at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in spring 2024.

‘As a director, he's on a roll. All four of his opera productions in 2024 have been hits. (...) At the Deutsche Oper Berlin, he discovers the distressed woman behind the Xanthippe in Richard Strauss' Intermezzo. He succeeds in doing so in a surprising, clever, multi-layered way, convincing with details, humour and precise characterisation. The award for best director therefore goes to the future artistic director of the Hamburg State Opera: Tobias Kratzer.’

INTERMEZZO will be performed again on 13, 16 and 23 March 2025.
