For Richard Wagner, Beethoven's 7th Symphony was the sounding portrait of a "new man" and the "apotheosis of dance itself", drawn as a utopia. Yet also without pathos: no other of Beethoven's symphonies are shaped by captivating dance rhythms in such a way. Rhythm, melody and harmony are used equally as design media that are based on one another. But there are exceptions, such as in the rushing allegro con brio of the closing measure. The transition to the string theme is shaped by a modulation to its C minor basic key without affecting the thematic material. Only the strings have a dotted rhythm that preempts the string theme inspired by Hungarian folk dance. This moment also marks the outbreak of pure rhythmic energy, driven by the force intrinsic to Beethoven's music.
