Dr. Takt über „Lucia di Lammermoor“ / Akt II, Ziffer 41 - Deutsche Oper Berlin
Dr Takt on “Lucia di Lammermoor” / Act II, rehearsal figure 41
Dr Takt knows the special parts of many a score - and explains their fascination to us
When LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR reaches its climax during the 20-minute mad scene, we witness the extreme emotions felt by a woman brought into this situation by the actions of men, turned into music. This is also the apex of virtuosity, in which madness takes the shape of ambiguous musical patterns. Although not noted by Donizetti in the score, the intent is for the melody line (especially in the repetition of individual phrases) to reach its limits: The ornamentation and expansion of the vocals threaten to capsize, overflow, even burst. The ornament becomes a propellant, and the main character being brought to and beyond her limits is expressed through the most virtuosic singing.
