Der Ring des Nibelungen – Die Walküre
Richard Wagner (1813 – 1883)After the reign of the gods has reached its radiant zenith at the end of the RHEINGOLD with the entry into Valhalla Castle, the signs in the WALKÜRE are stormy: the people are frozen in greed for power, mistrust and possessiveness, the gods confine themselves only to monitoring compliance with the old laws instead of questioning their meaning ... Der Ring des Nibelungen – Götterdämmerung
Richard Wagner (1813 – 1883)In the final part of the tetralogy, the theatrical devices that dominate Stefan Herheim's version of the RING also come together for the grand finale: the concert grand piano, where the play once began, is just as present as the white cloth, which, among other things, mutates into the shroud of the murdered hero. And, of course, the suitcases are also present, which in the course of the tetralogy have repeatedly created new landscapes and play situations. In the end, this world sinks, only to be reborn in the next play ... Richard Wagner [1813 – 1883]Wagner described his SIEGFRIED as a "heroic comedy" which, in its balance between comic and tragic elements, remains the challenge for its directors to this day. Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
Richard Wagner (1813 – 1883)The world of MEISTERSINGER is a closed system not only in the master singers' pedantic and by-the-book guild ironised by Wagner, but also in Nuremberg's urban society as a whole: the new – embodied by outsider Walther von Stolzing – cannot bring about revolutionary change, but rather is incorporated into the system. For their new production, Jossi Wieler, Anna Viebrock and Sergio Morabito investigate the mechanisms of such a hermetic artistic society. Can art claim artistic liberty in a conservative and dogmatic environment? And what potential does it hold to overthrow the system? ... Il Teorema di Pasolini
Giorgio Battistelli [*1953]In his 1968 film "Teorema", Pasolini formulated a radical reckoning with the bourgeoisie: the upper-middle-class family at the centre of the work is held together only by conventions, and the erotic seductive power of a stranger alone is enough to break apart this ossified system. Battistelli has been fascinated by "Teorema" ever since he first set the material to music for the Munich Biennale in 1992 at Henze's suggestion, at that time as a chamber opera with silent actors. Now, 30 years later, Battistelli is shaping the Pasolini original as a grand opera ... Johann Sebastian Bach [1685 – 1750]The reports of the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the Bibles are among the foundations of European culture. Bach created a musical ritual for the believing congregation of his time with "Matthew Passion".
